A magnet is an object that sticks to other objects. When magnets are the same poles, they repel. Magnets stick to iron, steel, and many metals, but sometimes magnets do not want to stick to certain metals. Get a glass of water and put some sort of metal that is magnetic in it and get a magnet. You can move the magnet up and down and the metal will follow. Magnets will not pick up rubber because it is not steel, iron, or a metal that will stick. A compass is magnetic. You can make one. You can find iron underground.
